Magazines are what makes magfed paintball and they can be used as singles or two doubled together. It seems rather few people use doubled mags and I have been wondering why, I went that way almost immediately when couplers came available.
With real steal, the weight of double magazines starts to be a factor, but with paintballs, the extra weight is neglible, so I can’t see any big downsides. Biggest advantage is that half the time changing magazines is way faster that makes playing easier.
Even if you can’t be bothered to change your gear to carry all magazinesd doubled, using just one doubled magazine to start games with would be an advantage.
Things to consider:

If you are now playing magfed with normal single magazines and consider moving to doubled magazines, a con might be that you might need to get new mag pouches or totally new vest/belt etc. (Well some of us don’t think getting new gear is a con :))
Depending on the manufacturers, mag couplers take some extra space (CF20 magazines with coupler and without pictured below). Some more, some less, so testing is your friend before using money. Ask your teammates what they are using and try things out before buying anything. How stiff the doubled mags are to put in the pouches, do they move around, is re-indexing doable during playing etc.

If you are using a dump pouch, also test doubled mags with it too. They take more space than two singles, so getting things in might get harder. If you have a narrow pouch that can take three normal mags side by side, well you can’t fit more than one double magazine in the same space etc.
Personally I have been using doubled mags with single pouches, so the other mag kinda hangs out in the open (pictures below). This works at least with CF20 mags by using just one mag coupler and some rubber padding between mags (check pictures), which leaves the top of the mags open for inserting. I have been using Zentauron laser cut pouches, that are suitably stiff to hold the weight of two mags. Outside magazines will of course get direct hits sometimes, but it is the same as when mags get hit while loaded to marker, for a few years I haven’t had any magazines broken this way.

Coupling CF20 magazines

With EMF100 CF20 magazines, they can be coupled in two main ways with the factory made couplers (and probably even more if you use tape in imaginative ways). Couplers leave enough room between the magazines for them to be inserted to the marker.

I have been using them with the doors in opposite (”outside”) sides (picture above, left side magazines). Pros are that you can use the magazines like they were singles, loading can be done normally by using the ratched without restrictions and opening the door works normally. During play you can also check the remaining amount of paintballs normally thru the transparent door for both magazines. This is a major plus for me, doing the mag check constantly during play has become automatic and very useful thing for me.
With this style double magazine inserted, the ”extra” magazine is always in the right side of the marker (viewed from back, picture below). You can see if it still sealed (full) or if the feed door is open with paintball showing (partly used) or if the follower is peeking out (mag is empty). In tight situations everything you don’t need to remember is a bonus :).

A con with this style is that the non-inserted magazine has the activation mechanism towards front (picture below). This will eventually lead you getting hit in there and paint will potentially get inside the magazine. That can usually only fixed with completely opening the mag up for cleaning. Not the most common thing, but a hit will happen eventually.

A con is also that you need to spin the magazine 180 degrees when changing them, but that is neglible disadvantage for me.
You can also connect the magazines so that they are both the same way. Pros are that then you can change them without spinning and the mechanisms are more covered while inserted to marker. But a con for this is that you can’t open the ”right side” magazines door at all. You also need a shortened hex key to wind it’s ratched and then insert the paint via the feed port in the top. Also making a mag check can’t be done to the right side magazine, which is the major reason I personally won’t go this way.

Here was some thoughts about coupled magazines, I hope you found it interesting or learned something. Or have you found out more imaginative ways to use coupled mags?

Tips for playing magfed paintball in winter - @magfedfi

Tips for playing magfed paintball in winter

For us in Finland not playing paintball during cold the cold season would mean 4-5 month break, so that is not acceptable :). Overall best winter game experiences I have had, have been sunny winter days with a few degrees negative Celcius (about 24 degrees Fahrenheit). One might think having temperature above 0 degrees Celcius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) would always be better, but it brings the melting snow and humidity, that will eventually fog mask lenses. So if you can plan/choose your game days according to weather, all the better.
Here are some tips for playing in the winter.
Markers

Some paintball markers suffer more from cold, so choosing a good one can make your day. Totally mechical markers tend to be better for winter games, anything with batteries will eventually go out, if you are playing for several hours. Personally Planet Eclipse’s EMF100s and the Etek platform that it is based on, has been a blessing for our round-the-year playing group. The Gamma Core inside the EMFs and Eteks works very well if you can be bothered to grease it. It can develop small leaks in extreme cold, but even in those situations you can usually play with it.
Winter paintballs

Having good winter paint is essential. If you get paintballs breaking in barrels, the game day turns pretty miserable fast. If you can’t test the paint before the game day, it can be a good idea to get some boxes of different types, so a bad batch from one manufacturer doesn’t turn the games bad for the whole group.
With first snow/cold games look for the player who just “needs” to use the leftover paint from summer games. Lot’s of barrel cleaning usually ensues :).
Magazines and snow

If there is just a few centimeters of snow in the ground, you can usually keep the magazines working by just keeping them of the ground, avoid dropping them even in tight situations. If you drop some, inspect carefully and avoid using them for the rest of the day if there is snow inside, if you have spares.
If there is a lot of snow in the ground and/or snow in tree branches and bushes, avoiding it gets more complicated. A good way to keep magazines working in this situation is to re-index empty mags to your chest rig or plate carrier with the feed port down where snow can’t get in.
With lots of snow even using a dump pouch can be risky, as they tend to collect snow inside them from bushes and then it transfers to magazines. Different magazine types can be vulnerable to snow in different ways, but for example with Planet Eclipse’s CF20 mags I have been using a lot, just an unlucky bit of snow inside can jam it, if it gets to suitable place and/or melts.
Using magazine pouches with flaps helps against snow and water. Also having the feed port down inside the pouch is good, but that is not necessarily possible with some magazine types when they are loaded, as they can open the mechanism and you lose some balls. Empty mags can then go in feed port first.
If your magazines have the sliding cover for the feedgate (“garage door” style), it is a good idea to always close it after reloading and especially so for snow games.
Masks

Today’s paintball masks with thermal lenses are pretty good for winter play. However, with cold/humidity all lenses tend to fog up eventually or actually start to ice up, so having extra masks is a good idea. If the game field has possibility to keep those extra ones in warm room or car, even better.
If you have glasses, contact lenses are your friend for winter play. Glasses tend to fog up before the masks lenses and unfortunately can make playing pretty impossible. If contacts can’t be used, some players have had success with Exfog Antifog systems, that are connected to mask strap and blow air inside the lens.
Clothing and boots

If you are a bit cold before the games start in your playing clothes, that is usually a good sign. During play having too much on brings sweat when the adrenaline is running. Then having some extra big jacket to just throw over the playing gear keeps you warm during breaks.
Layered clothing is the way to go. Merino wool for base layer is good to transfer sweat away from body, then a layer for warmth and then top layer for insulation. Add or take out layers during the day depending on the temperature.
Different sorts of winter camo are fun to play with, although they usually don’t actually work that well in the relatively short distances we play paintball in, but they can bring the advantage if you can stay very still sometimes :).
During the game day special care should be taken to keep your feet, fingers and throat warm and dry. Any of those getting wet/cold makes for miserable playing experience fast and unfortunately I have seen some players never came back to winter games after that sort of awful experience. Winter boots and gloves that keep the snow and water outside are good choices.
A change of clothes and extra sets of gloves and socks to change even between games are good ideas. A dry and warm shirt is a good morale booster too :).
Big no-nos for snow games are low shoes and summer type gloves. Snow gets in and melts from body heat, which makes you wet and cold and miserable.
Playing in winter with snow can be challenging, but still fun if you prepare a bit beforehand.

What is magfed paintball?

You probably now what paintball is, but magfed paintball puts it’s own spin on things. Magfed paintball, short for magazine fed paintball, is a tactical variant of the traditional paintball game. Magfed emphasizes realism, strategy and precision over rapid-fire chaos. Unlike standard paintball markers, which use hoppers to feed hundreds of paintballs per game, magfed players load ammunition through detachable magazines, typically holding about twenty rounds each.
A magfed player might go to the field with about five or six magazines, so about 100-120 rounds total. In ”normal” or traditional style paintball player has typically a 200-250 round hopper and can have several 140 rounds pods in their podback, so the total might be for a single game be anywhere from 200 to 1000 paintballs.
This limitation on the amount of ammo forces players to think more, conserve shots and plan movements carefully, emphasizing more teamwork. The result is a more immersive experience that bridges the gap between recreational paintball and military simulation (milsim) style games, attracting enthusiasts who tend to crave more authenticity without the dangers of real firearms. At its core, magfed paintball transforms the sport side of the game into something more akin to airsoft in terms of tactical depth, but with the very satisfying splatter of paint to mark eliminations. It is not necessary, but players often use gear resembling military uniforms, complete with vests for carrying extra magazines and markers designed to mimic real-world rifles.
The appeal of magfed paintball lies in the challenge: every shot counts and running out of ammo mid-firefight means you need to quickly reload under pressure. That adds adrenaline and skill to the mix. It's not just about spraying paint; it's about marksmanship, teamwork and outmaneuvering opponents in wooded or urban fields or bigger scenario-based arenas.
First magazine fed paintball marker might have been the Tippmann full-auto SMG62 already in the 1980s and pistols certainly have had magazines for a long time, but magfed paintball finally surged forward in the 2010s when properly working twenty round magazines for rifle sized markers started appearing.
Rounds with fins

Practical working magazines were a necessity, with them there was also room for First Strike Rounds. Talking about magfed paintball would not be complete without mentioning them. FSRs are a fin stabilized half ball instead of the traditional spherical, round paintballs. Fins give FSRs more range and accuracy and they are very much sought after advantage. Fins also cause a whistling sound when they fly past opposing player, that causes instant recognition of the danger of the additional accuracy and range.
Due to fins, FSRs can be fed to markers only via magazines, so they are kinda synonymous with magfed paintball, can’t have them in traditional paintball markers that feed from hoppers above the barrel.
Unique flavor

Magfed’s unique flavor comes up by comparing it to speedball tournament paintball. In tournaments you have a very regulated field, you win by eliminating opponents and make points by touching their start bunker, games are 5 vs 5, both sides have identical bunkers, the field is always the same size, markers shoot with maximum regulated rate of fire, games are fast and the time is very limited. Each player might shoot 500+ paintballs per a two minute round, using lots of paint to deny opponents movements.
These are not bad things in any way, but it is a very different flavor of the game compared to magfed paintball.
In magfed paintball team sizes can very greatly from just a few players per side to hundreds of players. Game time can be from few minutes to whole day. Equipment is much more varied. Winning games depends on game format, that there are endless options that imaginative game organizers come up with. Games often incorporate different kinds of objectives, like rescuing a pilot or finding lost equipment in the field. That makes the games more varied and narrative-driven compared to very formal way speedball is played.
Make no mistake, shooting opponents is what makes the game interesting and is the main idea of magfed paintball too, but it is not always the necessary and smartest thing to do. Compared to strictly regulated tournaments, magfed has so much variety that the possibilities are endless.
The limited ammo in magazines promotes communication, teamwork and stealth. Reloading becomes a tactical element; players must cover each other while swapping mags, simulating real combat reloads. Also regognizing opportunities when opponents are reloading or low on ammo is an important part of the game.
While speedball rewards aggressive, run-and-gun styles, magfed encourages aiming and punishes wasteful shooting. A common mantra is "one shot, one kill," encouraging players to aim carefully or move to better position to shoot rather than hose down areas.
With magfed paintball, learning curve builds skills like patience and teamwork, transferable to other paintball styles. In conclusion, magfed paintball redefines the sport by prioritizing brains over brawn, realism over recklessness. It's a gateway to deeper engagement, whether you're a casual player seeking fun or a tactician craving simulation. With its growing popularity, now's the time to load up a magazine and dive in—paintball has never felt so real.

If you live in a climate that brings snow in winter, some white camouflage can help a bit to get an edge during games. And it certainly gets you in suitable mood for playing :).
Overall I think snow (and other) camos are designed for 200-300 meter distances and above. So when we play paintball and the opponents are usually under 100 meters and probably in the 20-40 meter range, the camo's effectiveness is greatly reduced. When you stay absolutely still, it can still help, especially if things are happening around you that gather opponents attention. But mostly wearing snow camo is nice for getting into the groove of the winter games :).
Having this style thin polyester over the clothes camo has other good going for it too. It keeps the snow outside and prevents getting wet for some degree. When snow does not stick, it won't melt on you either. It is not waterproof, but for 3-5 hour games it has worked great, usually the clothes under it are dry. Paint usually stays in the top layer too.
Putting some camo on your marker can be done with those stretchy camo tapes, I have some, but personally I don't like them much, cleaning them after getting hit is a pain. Instead buy a couple of extra neck gaiters on the camo pattern of your choice. Cut them for suitable sizes, use some needle and thread and white elastic bands where suitable and you get customized camo for your marker that can be thrown to the washing machine :).
Finally got two paintballs colliding midair, check out the video below.
Not totally perfect as the camera is moving, but pretty good catch for actual gameplay video and not done in studio :).
In this game I ended up moving around the field a lot to get some eliminations, took a nosedive and got taken out twice from unseen opponents, which always sucks when in the receiving end. I added a new short barrel to the Tac 9 build for this game day and it worked nicely. I am looking forward to playing with this short build more and more. I got so accustomed to the long barrel and silencer combo during the years that it is hard to fathom how much they actually restrict movement. When you hit the trees with long barrel a few times, you start to avoid certain spots in the field without thinking about it. Now moves and crawling are much easier.
After using the long barrel and silencer for a long while my play style has evolved, so it was kind of eye opening to push more aggressively without having to worry about the barrel hitting everything in tight spots. It led to more close quarters play and bunkering than normally as can be seen in this game, video below.
I kinda made a point during the day to push forward and go to tight spots that would have been awkward with longer setup. No big problems, looking forward to the next game day with this :).
Playing in winter is it’s own challenge, everything seems to be harder and more tiresome, but PH Paintball has been running games for several winters and we have things pretty much figured out. Suitable boots and gloves make a real difference, biggest problems tend to come from masks fogging, but you can fight that too with some tricks. There just needs to be a will to play year round :).

Got some nice hits on camera and also some footage of incoming paint, pretty rare :).
Only hick-up for the day was a faulty camera cable, so didn’t get that much zoom camera footage.
And the opponents weren’t that nice, they tended to shoot you :).

Hit Comp 14 video got some nice weather games, playing is almost always fun, but even more fun when it is not raining :).
We played a lot of control point type of games with respawns at that time and I grew to like them a lot. Lots of action and the team that plays together better tends to win, so it pushes even new players to actively works as a unit, so what is not to like :).
I added some “I am hit” graphics for this video, what you think are they useful?

I got some game time with DYE DAM for Hit Compilation 13 video, nice summer weather and nice games. We tested some new game modes and props, very different from normal games and it keeps the interest up.
DYE DAM is a one smooth shooting machine. The default magazines for it work extremely well, but the drawback is the low ball count when compared to 20 round magazines, 10 + 10 balls in two channels means lots of mag changing. On longer distances it is kinda ok, but close quarters mean that you are in trouble, especially when you are alone and the opponents know what they are doing.
At the time of making the video there wasn’t much choices for magazines, but now that is changing with 20+ ball magazines in plans. The coming of the Planet Eclipse MG100 magfed gun that uses the same magwell will probably also accelerate new desings.
For this video I added some movie type sound effects for the slow motion parts, hope you like them :).

I think these games in the Hit Comp 12 were the first ones we used shields in PH Paintball field. How you feel about using them in paintball?
Of course if one is looking for realism they are so far off the mark, light plexiglass or wooden shields making players partly invulnerable. But they sure make good force multipliers, giving new possibilities for moving between bunkers even when attackers and defenders are in about equal sized teams.
We have used shields mainly in game modes where one side is clearly in attacking role and the can use the shields if they like. I think we tested defenders using them, but that got fast forgotten, kinda pointless when defenders don’t need to move and they can use the shields just to improve the normal bunkers.
Also the size of the shields makes a big difference. Using smaller riot shields has worked pretty well for our games, they are useful but not too powerful. Suurpeli type big shields (I think maximum is two square meters for those) in smaller games would be bad. They are pretty well balanced with 100+ players per team kind of games, but just one or two shields in smaller game would wreak havoc.

PH Paintball has been adding a lot of new game modes over the years. I think some of the games in this video were the first ones where we tested what has become known as the “Barrel Game,” a variation of control points around the field.
Respawns and several objectives in the middle of the field make for interesting games, where you really need to communicate with teammates to actually get anything done. This game mode also teaches to recognize the moments when you need to move to take advantage of the situation. It sometimes gets a bit painful also, when you need to push against opponents who know what they are doing :).

I got some indoor playtime for Hit Compilation 10 video near Kuopio, Finland. Games were very straight forward, basically whatever the mission was, either you were defending a choke point or trying to attack thru one, so most of the time everyone knew where opponents were and no room to maneuver. It got boring very fast (how many times you want to rush to the exact same spot and get shot by the same guy), but when defending it of course gave some nice shots to make video with :).
Outdoor game footage is from early spring, so in typical Finnish style everything is pretty grey, no green stuff up yet. I think some shots are from Mekano Cup, a tournament for mechanical markers only (no batteries in hoppers either), which was fun to take part with magfed marker.
